On Friday I had the pleasure of joining the crew of the Flagship Detroit on an hour-long flight around Chicago. We departed O’Hare Airport to the west and flew south and east before turning up the shore of Lake Michigan and joining the pattern for an approach and landing on O’Hare’s runway 28C.

Start Me Up

In this video, Captain Zane Lemon starts the Detroit’s left engine. Be sure to turn up the volume.

On the FlightDeck

This video is footage from a GoPro camera I installed on the flight deck. You can really see how much work it is to fly the DC-3.

Landing a Tail-dragger

Returning to O’Hare, we landed on Runway 28C.

I’ll have a full article about the Flagship Detroit on Airchive soon.

Every year on August 19, Orville Wright’s birthday, we celebrate National Aviation Day. We take a minute to celebrate the fact that journeys that used to take weeks now take hours, that we fly through the air at 500 miles and hour, that we do so while being able to watch TV or use WiFi, and that we do so safely.

We all love to complain about flying, about going to the airport, and about how expensive it is. But let’s consider for moment the words of Louis CK (which are decidedly not safe for enjoyment in an office setting).
